Breathwork refers to intentional breathing techniques used to influence your physical, emotional, and mental state. Different styles exist – from slow, calming breathing used to reduce stress, to more active patterns designed to increase energy or emotional release. At its core: you’re using your breath as a tool to regulate your nervous system.
Breathing directly affects the autonomic nervous system. Slow, controlled breathing activates the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) system. Fast or forceful breathing can stimulate the sympathetic (“alert/energised”) system. Breath rhythm influences heart rate variability, blood CO₂ levels, and vagal tone. You are essentially changing your physiology on purpose
